Joshua's opinion this announcement makes me wonder if microsoft is going to extend the lifecycle for windows xp home edition, which is currently set to. I doubt microsoft will release service pack 3 before the last half of the year. From what i can tell, the sp 3 release won't have any impact on the product's lifecycle. The os does not have an, and microsoft's policy states, “when support for a product ends, support of the service packs for that product will also end. The product's support lifecycle supersedes the service pack support policy.” releasing an update and then almost automatically stopping support for it seems like an interesting approach to product updates, so i suspect microsoft will extend the mainstream support for xp to give users more time.

It would be the smart thing to do anyway, since the company's windows products have been slow to go away–especially windows 2000 and windows 98. Yes, vista will be great, and, yes, older operating systems will be older.

However, these facts have yet to affect adoption rates. They are essentially the same thing minus a few advanced features in the pro version. The same service packs and hotfixes work on both versions so what are they gonna do? Block installation on home edition? My guess is they won't provide any tech support on the home version but as long as there are sps for pro, their should be sps for home. Shiv charitra book in marathi pdf book. X probably roll in fixes added to vista (1:10pm est mon oct 03 2005) this sounds like they will bring xp up-to-date security lessons they learned while developing vista, and perhaps integrate ie 7 into the xp stream.

I do wish microsoft was a little more agressive in ending support for older operating systems. Yes, there is considerable backlash anytime a windows os goes end of life, but end users need to realize that even for a company the size of microsoft spreading their development team thinly in order to support 10+ year old os'es and not focusing on one current os is asking a lot, and perhaps behind the reasons why windows has been so insecure over the years. Apple pretty much abandones each os as new ones are released, they may offer some security fixes for a year or two, but if your more then two versions behind their current os, good luck getting support. It is nice for microsoft to consider legacy users for so long, but it is hurting them in the long run. Considering that os development is slowing down because of the complexity of the source code, chances are that ms will not be introducing os'es with a les s then 4-5 year lifecycle.

The sequel to vista may not be around till after 2010. So, this whining and complaining about having to upgrade every year or two an not being able to afford it is no longer valid. A 5 year return on a software investment is practical and more then expected, but after 5 years if your not bugeting for an upgrade, don't cry if your support runs out. – by topher re topher (1:58pm est mon oct 03 2005) perhaps microsoft should just go fuckthemselves.tired of there below standard operating systems. – by keyferd never bought, installed, or maintained xp (2:01pm est mon oct 03 2005) or me for that matter, so i don't care about a sp for xp after vista. But i have no plans to buy vista either. The only thing ms did smart in xp was ntfs so that hds couldn't be repartitioned to dual boot with linux.
